Mission
Statement
The
Albuquerque Poet Laureate Program (APLP) celebrates the
diversity of poetry in Albuquerque by offering a resident poet
to make meaningful connections, honor and serve the community,
elevate the importance of the art form, and share poetry with
Albuquerque residents.
Poet Laureate Expectations
Expectations for the
Albuquerque Poet Laureate include:

The ability to fulfill her/his term in residence

Attendance/Participation/Reading/Performance at four (4)
ceremonial/civic engagement events per year

No fewer than four (4) “poetry advocacy” events per year,
during which the Poet Laureate shares the art and love of
poetry with a non-traditional and/or underserved audience.
Examples of poetry advocacy events include (but are not
limited to):
A reading at a Veterans organization
A workshop at a domestic violence shelter
A group exercise and performance at a correctional institution
Please note that work the poet had already planned on doing with
underserved audiences can count.

One community outreach project, as outlined in the
application/proposal, scope to be determined by funds
available through the APLP.

The creation of a body of work (within six months of the end
of the residency). This may include, but not be limited to:
A series of poems
A CD or video
A performance
A publication of some kind (book, chapbook or broadside)

Semi-annual report to the APLP Organizing Committee

Regular (monthly) updates to the Poet Laureate’s page on the
APLP website
Poet Laureate Qualifications
It is a goal of the APLP to make this opportunity available to a
broad range of applicants while ensuring that the position of
Poet Laureate represent our community with enthusiasm and
excellence.
Applicants for the position of Albuquerque Poet Laureate will:

be at least
twenty one years of age
-
have lived in
the Greater Albuquerque Metro Area for at least the last
three years

be a seasoned
poet with an interest in, and a history of, serving the
Albuquerque community
-
be well spoken
in public venues, and
-
be available to
serve in the ways outlined in the Poet Laureate Expectations
for the duration of their tenure.
Further, applicants should have prior accomplishment in some or
all of these areas: publications, noteworthy public appearances,
awards or honors.
